Robert F. Kennedy was a complicated man. Deeply religious but also inquisitive, he became increasingly interested in existentialism after the death of his brother (Newfield 1978; Hilty 1997; Heymann 1998). Privileged and wealthy, he also wanted to identify with the less fortunate. His father a Nazi sympathizer, Bobby lost his life because of his support of Israel.

A Young RFK

As the third son of Joseph and Rose Kennedy, Robert had to prove his worth in a family of competitors. His father’s golden child was oldest son Joe, and John F. Kennedy was second in line. Joseph Kennedy had had political aspirations of his own before his unpopular opinions about World War II ended his political career. So his sons were groomed to live out his dream for him.

Joe and John competed against each other, especially in sports, to impress their father. But little Robert was barely noticed in his early years and fought for his place in the family, hoping not to disappoint Joseph P. Kennedy (Heymann 1998: 40). Once, before he had learned to swim, Bobby jumped into the water repeatedly, determined to swim or drown. And each time, Joe would rush in to save his little brother (Hilty 1997: 20) . This reckless courage followed him throughout his life. His desire to uphold the Kennedy name, even at the expense of his own life, shows how loyal Robert was to the teachings of his father, who instilled in his children the importance of family.
