Temperature divides glacial areas from dry lands. Strangely enough, both areas officially are deserts according to Murck and Skinner in Visualizing Geology (2008). A desert is any area that receives less than 250 mm of annual rainfall. Such an overview suggests simplicity but in truth the variety among deserts calls for specific subcategories. A desert exists in subtropical, continental interior, rainshadow, coastal, and polar regions.
Desert Wind Erosion
The geologic processes occurring in deserts vary based on the temperature and location. Consider that most deserts are barren, sandy regions with little vegetation. Wind gusts wear away surface structures like boulders and hills, reducing them to granules. The process is typical wind erosion. The granules naturally relocate, at times in large clouds if air strength and heft is formidable (Wiley, China Desert).
