Niagara-on-the-Lake - History

The history of Niagara-on-the-Lake reflects the history of early Ontario. In 1781 it officially became a town and was named Newark. It also became a haven for British loyalists fleeing the United States in the aftermath of the American Revolution.

In 1792, the town become the capital of Upper Canada and a few years later,it was renamed Niagara. Because of its strategic position at the juncture of Lake Ontario and the Niagara River the town played an important role in the war of 1812 when it was briefly captured by the American forces. It was then recaptured by the British who rebuilt the town to its present splendour.
