Every year, thousands of American White Pelicans (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) fly 4,000 kilometers south from their normal habitats in central Canada to enjoy western Mexico’s warm winter.
November to April is Pelican-watching season at Lake Chapala, Mexico’s largest lake, located 400 kilometers northwest of Mexico City.
The White Pelican is a large bird with a wingspan of up to three meters and may weigh up to seven kilograms. It does not dive-bomb fish as do some other pelicans, which may explain why it finds Lake Chapala particularly attractive.
